San Diego's nice weather has earned the city the honor of hosting three Super Bowls (1988, 1998 and 2003), and two annual college bowl games, Poinsettia and Holiday. Since 2007, Qualcomm, or the "Q," has hosted the IRB Sevens World Series, a rugby tournament featuring seven players per side instead of 15.
The PGA holds its annual Buick Invitational Tournament at Torrey Pines, a municipal course owned by the city. The beautiful course, which overlooks the Pacific Ocean, is located in the affluent community of La Jolla. In 2008, Torrey Pines hosted the U.S. Open (by the way, Tiger Woods won the tournament). About 10 miles south of Torrey Pines is Mission Bay home of the annual San Diego Crew Classic. The event draws more than 100 college and amateur crew teams from all over the country.
Collegiately, the San Diego State Aztecs play football at Qualcomm Stadium. SDSU is a Division 1 school participating (for the most part) in the Mountain West Conference. The college also competes in baseball, basketball, water polo, women's volleyball and several other sports. Both the men's and women's basketball teams play at Viejas Arena located on the university's campus. |
