Great Date Ideas for San Diego

When it's time for date night in San Diego, a myriad of choices awaits. From casual to cultural, there really is something for every mood and every budget.

If you feel like taking in a film, but don't want to go to just any old cineplex, two more romantic options are available: Cinema Under the Stars and the South Bay Drive-In Theatre. Cinema Under the Stars presents a slate of mostly classic offerings, a heated patio with zero-gravity chairs, and a cabana stocked with loveseats. Over at the South Bay Drive-In Theatre, you'll get first-run films and whatever comforts you pack into your vehicle.

Want to let the ocean work its magic on your beloved? Take a sunset sail. Between the breeze, the light, and the water, romance will ensue. Sunset kayak tours and gondola rides are alternative options. You can also take a ferry over to Coronado for dinner at the Coronado Brewing Company.

If you're feeling adventurous and want an even better view, cruise up to the Skysurfer Balloon Co. in Del Mar for a sunset hot air balloon ride complete with a champagne toast.

Like the ocean, but not the waves? Make a reservation at Candelas on the Bay for some fine food and even finer views. Or, keep it simple, and build a bonfire on the beach at Mission Bay Park. Plan it right and you two can ooh and aah to a fireworks show compliments of Sea World.

For something a bit more casual, the two of you could spend an entire evening strolling around Seaport Village, enjoying the wind chimes and art galleries, maybe stopping into Marion's Fish Market or Harbor House for dinner. In fact, the whole Embarcadero area is a great stage for a date; they even have concerts you can attend.

The San Diego Zoo is always a fun destination, as are the numerous museums in town. Couple a visit to the Natural History Museum or Timken Museum of Art with a picnic at Balboa Park's Rose Garden for a great afternoon. While you're there, maybe hop into one of the horse-drawn carriages for a tour of the waterfront.

If you want to ensure you get at least a kiss out of the evening, grab dinner at Forever Fondue in La Jolla. Long-standing tradition dictates that anyone who drops their food into the pot has to kiss the person next to them. And you can't argue with tradition! Before your dinner and kiss, saunter through La Jolla's art walk and check out the Dr. Seuss gallery.

Nature lovers might enjoy heading up to Julian Stables for a guided horseback trail ride that includes views of Lake Cuyamaca and Volcan Mountain. You could also take a hike up to Cedar Falls and swim under the falls.

For the party people in the house, the Gas Lamp District is the place to go to enjoy drinks, dancing, and everything else at clubs like Onyx, Thin, and Bitter End. Bertrand's is also on Fifth Street and boasts a patio that offers glorious panoramic views of the city.

With 25 museums, a slew of great restaurants, and a multitude of other activities, you're sure to come up with something great for your date.
